The Seydel Reed Removal Pliers from 16:23 Custom Harmonicas
January 1, 2018
Seydel is committed to the musicians who play their harmonicas. This commitment continues after the sale. There are many options for maintenance and repair of Seydel harmonicas and some players choose to make repairs themselves. Seydel offers easy access to replacement parts and tools. One of these tools are the de-riveter pliers which are used to remove the rivets that secure the reeds to the reed plates. 16:23 Custom Harmonicas is the supplier for these tools and Seydel purchases them from us. Pictured below are the modified pliers. They will soon be on their way to Germany where they will be listed on the Seydel web site and sold all over the world.
The pliers are known in some manufacturing circles as "Aircraft Pliers" or "Rivet Punch Pliers". They consist of a sharpened punch and a receiver. The punch forces the rivet through the reed plate and into the receiver hole on the opposite jaw. The screw that is sticking through the jaw is an optional depth gauge that can be used of the technician wants the pliers to hit the stop before the rivet comes completely out. Taped to the handle is a spare punch pin.
We are frequently asked if these pliers will work on non-Seydel harmonicas. It is possible they will work, but in general, the punch and receiver holes are designed for the rivets used on Seydel harmonicas. It is rare that the pliers will break or malfunction, but we have found that when this does happen it is when the player is using them on non-Seydel harps.
